Championship manager’s future in doubt despite narrowly missing out on promotion

Chris Wilder's future at Sheffield United is in doubt, talkSPORT understands.
The Blades hierarchy are meeting this week to discuss their summer plans including the possibility of parting company with Wilder.
It is believed some board members are in favour of keeping Wilder.
However, others would prefer a change of direction after they were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland in the Championship play-off final.
Sheffield United finished third and ten points adrift of champions Leeds United and Burnley in the automatic promotion spots.
Wilder first joined the Blades as manager in 2016 following stints at Oxford United and Northampton Town.

He guided the club back to the Premier League three years later with a second-place finish in the Championship.
They finished ninth in the top flight and only five points behind the European qualification spots.
However, Wilder left the club in March 2021 by mutual consent before they suffered relegation back to the Championship.
The 57-year-old returned to management eight months later with Middlesbrough but spent just under a year at the Riverside Stadium.

A short-term spell at Watford followed before Wilder returned to the Blades in December 2023, replacing Paul Heckingbottom.
Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League again only months later and narrowly missed out on a comeback last month.
Four defeats from their final seven league fixtures saw their bid for automatic promotion come to a halt.
They thrashed Bristol City 6-0 in the play-off semi-finals but couldn't beat Sunderland at Wembley despite taking the lead.
Tyrese Campbell had the Blades leading at half-time but Eliezer Mayenda netted for the Black Cats with 14 minutes left on the clock.
A stoppage-time winner from Tommy Watson sent Sunderland back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017.
