Birmingham City might have to look elsewhere for another centre-back with new Rangers manager Russell Martin apparently set to take a closer look at Ben Davies in pre-season.

Davies, 29, enjoyed a highly successful season on loan at Blues and helped the club win the League One title in record-breaking fashion.

The central defender played 44 games for Blues across all competitions and forged a solid partnership with Christoph Klarer in the second half of the season.

BirminghamLive has previously reported that Blues are interested in re-signing Davies and Kieran Dowell on a permanent basis from Rangers.

The appointment of Russell Martin as Rangers’ new manager could change the club’s stance on two players whose futures seemed to be away from Ibrox this time last year.

According to the Daily Mail, Martin is keen to freshen up Rangers’ back-line and plans to assess Davies in pre-season.

The report states: “Martin is reluctant to close the door on any player before he’s had a chance to assess them in pre-season and Ben Davies is likely to be offered a chance to resurrect his Rangers career.”

Despite dropping down to League One with Blues last season, Davies has a wealth of experience at Championship level with Preston North End and Sheffield United.

Davies would add to Blues’ already strong complement of centre-backs with Klarer, Krystian Bielik and Phil Neumann all under contract.

He has one year remaining on his contract at Ibrox and Blues will no doubt be keeping tabs on how his situation develops under Martin.
