Next Middlesbrough manager odds: Liverpool legend now favourite

Middlesbrough are on the lookout for a new manager this summer after they failed to get into the play-offs for the second successive season.

Michael Carrick was sacked by Middlesbrough earlier today after a tenure of nearly three years at the helm of the Tyneside club.

Boro's aims are clear after they have finished 7th, 4th, 8th and 10th in their last four seasons in the Championship.

They aren't quite progressing as much as the bosses would like with a strong side each season but not quite enough to be amongst the play-offs or promotion talks by the end of the campaigns.

A name that has emerged as the favourite fairly quickly is Steven Gerrard.

The former Liverpool captain and Rangers manager is now the clear favourite overtaking every candidate, though it is still close in the odds between three potential managers.

Gerrard's managerial career has been quite mixed, first taking over at Rangers between 2018 and 2021.

He then earned a Premier League move to Aston Villa for almost an entire year but could only gain a 32.5% win-rate which saw him dismissed in the early stages of the 2022/23 season.

He then went to Saudi Arabia for a year and a half with Al-Ettifaq before leaving in January of this year as one of the world's highest-paid managers having asked to leave for personal reasons.

A move back to British football could be the ideal move for the Liverpool legend who might be keen to gain more experience in the EFL in a bid to get back into the top-flight.

Ex-Premier League boss Rob Edwards was initially the huge leading contender at an odds-on price but as time has gone on they are no closer to signing the former Luton manager.

He was with Town from 2022 to now, despite their somewhat inevitable relegation from the top-flight this season.

Appointed in November 2022, Edwards having just recently been let go by Watford, steered the club to win the Championship play-off final.

That was considered a remarkable achievement with the squad they had at the time finishing 3rd place behind Burnley and Sheffield United.

Edwards has proven he can take teams up in the Championship and that has got to appeal to Boro who possess the potential.

Cooper is well within the mix as well though and probably shouldn't be discounted at 3/1.

Cooper did great things with Nottingham Forest in the Championship and certainly deserves to be considered after a tough time in the Premier League with both them and Leicester City subsequently.

But the football betting market is still wide open with three more potential candidates less than double digits in the prices.
