Sheffield United have joined the race to sign Birmingham City-linked defender Harry Darling.

That’s according to reliable website Swansea Independent who say the Blades have ‘displayed interest’ in the sought-after 25-year-old.

They claim Darling’s representatives are ‘part way through’ talks for him to join Blues’ rivals Wrexham, with the two clubs set to go head-to-head again in the Championship after they both won promotion from League One.

The story adds that other clubs want to take him from under the noses of Wrexham and Blues with the Premier League’s relegated trio Leicester City, Southampton and Ipswich Town all cited.

As are the Wembley-bound Blades who having demolished Bristol City in the Championship play-offs are now just 90 minutes and a win over Sunderland away from an instant return to the top flight.

However, United aren’t yet sure of which division they will be in, with the play-off final not until Saturday week, by which time Darling could have made his next step.

The centre back came through at Cambridge United before moving to MK Dons where he had an outstanding 18 months, scoring ten goals in his one full season and being named in the League One team of the Year.

That persuaded Swansea to make a move, with then manager Russell Martin instigating the reunion, since when the ball-playing central defender has made 112 appearances, 39 last term which included five goals.

As things stands Blues have first team captain Christoph Klarer, club captain Krystian Bielik and Phil Neumann on their books, with Dion Sanderson returning from Blackburn but likely to move on once again.

Rangers man Ben Davies filled in superbly as the left-sided centre back last season but there are no guarantees the 29-year-old returns to St Andrew’s @Knighthead Park. Darling is out of contract this summer but has an offer on the table from Swansea.
