Leeds United of old feel Sharp edge of Blade striker’s tongue

Billy Sharp is having a fantastic season for Sheffield United, his 22 league goals blazing away as the Blades look towards promotion to the Premier League.

Sharp’s 22 goals place him second only to Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki in the Sky Bet Championship scoring stakes. Thanks to the Sheffield-born striker’s goals, the Blades are perfectly poised to strike for promotion this season.

Sheffield United, and Sharp, face a difficult game at Elland Road today. It is a match that pits the 2nd placed home side Leeds against 3rd place visitors Sheffield United. It is also a match-up that pits Billy Sharp against one of his old clubs.

Sharp joined Leeds United in mid-August 2014 from Premier League side Southampton for a £270,000 fee. His time at Elland Road lasted just one season, with him moving back to Sheffield United in late-July the following year.

His time at Elland Road saw him make 35 appearances, scoring five goals for the Whites. However, in a recent interview with the Sheffield Star, Sharp gave some very pointed comments on that particular part of his successful career in football.

Describing his time there, the prolific Sheffield United hitman said:”Strange is probably the best word to describe my time at Leeds.” He then went on to talk about having to provide his own snap, saying: “But, on my first day, I had to take my own lunch. I had a greasy chip butty of course. And then there was talk of us having to take our own kit home.”

All of this was well documented and came at the time when then owner Massimo Cellino was making savage cuts at the West Yorkshire club. It was for this situation that Sharp reserved his most acerbic comments, saying: “There wasn’t many staff there. The owner was useless. I had three managers, some of them were useless too.

Despite the harsh words for the then regime, he still has some softer words to reflect on his time at Elland Road. On this he added: “I enjoyed my time at Leeds. There were some good lads and we had a half decent team but the turnover was just too much. It just was not settled and I felt for the fans. They were the ones who paid their money.”

Despite the turnover and general feeling of the place, Sharp did say he’d have fought for his place at Elland Road. “Having said all that, I would have stayed if it had not been Sheffield United who came in for me. I would tried to have got in the team in that second year.”
